"How much should I buy?" is the question every first-year operator asks — and the one a good wholesaler earns their keep on. Buy too little and you sell out on July 2nd; buy too much and your profit sits in unsold cases on July 7th. This is what fifty years of Oklahoma sell-through tells us about where the money actually is.
1The 80/20 of a fireworks stand
A fireworks stand follows the 80/20 rule hard: a handful of categories drive the overwhelming majority of what sells. Across our Oklahoma retailers, about seven category groups account for roughly three-quarters of every case sold and three-quarters of the revenue.
That doesn't mean stock only seven things — selection still matters, and the long tail fills out your stand. But it does mean your money and your shelf space should be concentrated where the demand is. Get the anchors right first; round out from there.
Joe's Tip
Depth beats breadth in your first season. It's better to be fully stocked on the 30 items everyone wants than to spread thin across 300 and run out of the winners before the Fourth.
2What actually sells
Here's the category mix from our most recent completed season, by share of cases sold (stand supplies like bags and signage are excluded). The top categories are where your order should start:
Volume vs. dollars
Share of cases isn't the whole story — some categories sell fewer units but carry a much higher ticket. Family Packs and Artillery Shells both punch well above their volume in revenue (premium price per case), so they deserve extra attention even beyond their unit share. The full picture:
| Category | Share of Cases | Share of Sales $ |
|---|---|---|
| 500g Multi-Effect Cakes | 22.7% | 18.3% |
| Family Packs & Assortments | 11.4% | 16.6% |
| 200g Multi-Effect Cakes | 10.9% | 9.2% |
| Multi-Effect Fountains | 9.2% | 8.4% |
| Artillery Shells (all sizes) | 9.0% | 12.8% |
| Roman Candles | 5.7% | 4.6% |
| 350g Multi-Effect Cakes | 5.0% | 4.1% |
| Novelty Items | 3.7% | 3.3% |
| Firecrackers | 3.6% | 2.7% |
| Smoke | 2.7% | 2.9% |
| Satellite & Winged Items | 2.0% | 2.0% |
| Sparklers | 1.7% | 2.1% |
| Saturn Missiles | 1.7% | 1.5% |
| Parachutes | 1.5% | 1.9% |
| Girandola | 1.4% | 1.1% |
| Hand-Held Fountains | 1.1% | 1.9% |
| Ground Spinners | 1.1% | 1.0% |
| Missiles | 1.1% | 1.4% |
| 500g Fountains | 1.1% | 1.0% |
| Cone Fountains | 0.9% | 0.8% |
| Base Fountains | 0.8% | 0.8% |
| 9-Shot Racks | 0.7% | 0.6% |
| All other categories | 1.1% | 0.9% |
Percentages are share of cases sold and share of sales dollars across Firecracker Joe's Oklahoma retailers in the most recent completed season. Stand supplies (bags, signage, licenses) and uncategorized items are excluded.
3Stock deep vs. stock wide
Translate the mix into a shelf strategy:
Stock deep — your anchors
These seven groups drive about three-quarters of sales. Carry real depth here; running out of these mid-season is the most expensive mistake an operator makes.
- 500-gram cakes — the single biggest category by far, and your top-dollar aerials.
- Family packs & assortments — high ticket, easy grab-and-go, big revenue share.
- 200-gram cakes — the value-tier repeater that moves in volume.
- Multi-effect fountains — the backbone of the ground-display wall.
- Artillery shells — modest unit share, premium dollars; stock a range of sizes.
- Roman candles and 350-gram cakes — round out the top tier.
Stock solid — the mid-tier
Steady movers that round out a complete stand: novelty items, firecrackers, smoke, sparklers, saturn missiles, parachutes, satellite/winged items, ground spinners, missiles, hand-held fountains, and girandola.
Stock wide but light — selection
The long tail. Carry a little for variety and to look fully stocked, but don't tie up budget here: cone & base fountains, 500-gram fountains, 9-shot racks, compound cakes, punks, and rotating candles. (Punks are the exception — cheap, and you sell them with everything, so keep plenty.)
Joe's Tip
Put your loudest, biggest aerials (500g cakes, artillery, family packs) where customers see them first. They set the tone, carry the highest tickets, and pull the average sale up.

New for 2026: bottle rockets
Bottle rockets and stick rockets are legal again for the first time since 1981 under the Rockets' Red Glare Act. They'll be one of the most-asked-for items this summer, so reserve yours early — see the catalog.
A note on bottle rocket projections
Because bottle rockets were only made legal in Oklahoma in 2026, we have no sales history to project from — none of the percentages or trends on this page include them. Our expectation that demand will be strong is based on 45 years of pent-up interest, not data. Plan a first-year quantity conservatively, watch how they move, and lean on a restock rather than overbuying out of the gate.
Read year-to-year carefully
The 2020–2021 backyard boom inflated nearly every category, so a "decline" from those peaks isn't a warning sign — it's a return to normal. Our guidance is based on the most recent seasons, not the pandemic spike.
6Build your first order
A simple way to turn all this into an order:
- Start with the anchors. Put the bulk of your budget and shelf space into the seven top categories — and within each, the proven sellers above.
- Round out the mid-tier for a complete, credible stand that has something for every customer.
- Go wide but light on the long tail — enough variety to look fully stocked without tying up cash.
- Load up the register impulse buys — punks, snappers, sparklers, and smoke are cheap, high-margin, and sell with almost every order.
- Match it to your spot. A rural highway stand and a suburban tent don't sell the same mix. Lean into what your location and crowd actually buy.
- Hold back for a restock. The last three days do most of the volume — reserve part of your budget to top up the winners on July 1st.

7How we know this
These numbers come from Firecracker Joe's own wholesale shipments to fireworks stands across Oklahoma — the most recent completed season, with several prior seasons for trend context. In other words, it's what retailers like you actually buy from us, statewide.
A few honest caveats:
- This reflects wholesale demand (what stands order from us), which is a strong proxy for what sells at retail — but it isn't your individual register data.
- Your mix will differ by location, crowd, weather, and pricing. Treat this as a starting framework, not a formula.
- It's not a guarantee of results. Like any retail business, your outcome depends on your location and effort.
- Percentages exclude stand supplies (bags, signage, licenses) and uncategorized items so the mix reflects sellable consumer fireworks only.
